Syed Saddiq: Undi18 will shake Malaysian politics
Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who is the MP of Muar, has praised the judgment of the High Court in Kuching, Sarawak, which ordered the government and the Election Commission (EC) to broaden the right to vote to individuals aged 18 and over by the end of the calendar year.
Former youth and sports minister stated in a statement that the decision was in accordance with the constitutional amendment to decrease the voting age from 21 to 18, which was passed by Parliament in 2019 with a unanimous majority.
“Today, millions of young people have triumphed. A political earthquake that will alter the landscape of Malaysian politics for the foreseeable future.
Taking to Twitter, he expressed his gratitude to the youths who had taken the government to court. “Today, they have won for millions of youths,” he said.
The prime minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and the attorney general, Tan Sri Idrus Azizan Harun, were also asked not to challenge today’s judgment, but rather to guarantee that the reduced voting age be implemented.
